Two thirds of Russians would want to see Putin as president even after 2018 - study

MOSCOW. May 6 (Interfax) - According to sociological studies, two thirds of Russians find it desirable that President Vladimir Putin would run in the 2018 election and win it, said Konstantin Kostin, head of the Foundation for the Development of Civil Society.

"Today 66% of respondents say they would want Putin to take part [in the election] in 2018 and win. Thus for such a share of our people this is the picture of the desired future," Kostin said presenting the results of the foundation's study "Putin's majority - stages of formation, structure, values" in Moscow on Wednesday.

Kostin did not rule out that in a year his foundation may produce a forecast of the impact of such a majority on the nearest federal electoral cycle. "A forecast may be made about the way Putin's majority will impact the nearest electoral cycle, how it is going to act during the Duma election [in 2016] and the presidential election in 2018," he said.

He said the foundation concluded that over the past year the so-called Putin's majority increased by 20%.

The study defined this majority as a broad public and political coalition representing virtually all sections of the population who support Putin and share his ideology.

The foundation believes this majority has potential for further expansion.
